The Case of the Missing Outlet Cover

At most home inspections I can guarantee I will find one thing....a missing outlet cover on an electrical receptacle. Where these outlet cover go is unknown. Did someone paint and forget to put in back on? Was it never put on in the first place? One can only wonder.

These missing mysteries are usually found in a attic, garage or basement. I have also found them in the general interior for which I hope the home has no small children. Why do you ask is one or two missing outlet covers a problem? Sure everyone knows not to touch a electric receptacle, right?

It is a problem because it is an automatic safety concern. On a written home inspection report safety issues are highlighted and red flagged at the top of the report. Most homeowners are capable of installing these small electrical covers. If not, be sure to hired a qualified electrician do install them for you.

If you plan to list your house for sale please take a moment to check each outlet to make sure there is a cover on them. If you are a realtor please discuss with your clients the importance of making sure this issues does not come up in an inspection, it is an easy fix.

Safety first......JCS Home Inspector. Happy outlet below.
